"Tôi yêu Việt Nam!"
What: Academic term abroad in Hanoi, Vietnam
When: Fall 2012
Internship: Center for Studies and Applied Sciences in Gender, Family, Women, and Adolescents
As part of my abroad experience I attained an internship with a non-governmental organization called the Center for Applied Sciences in Gender, Family, Women, and Adolescents or CSAGA. Although I was largely researching issues of violence against women and girls in Vietnam, CSAGA has three main foci: to prevent human trafficking, to prevent violence against women and girls, and to promote lesbian rights in Vietnam. I spent almost three months with the organization, working daily in a very hands-on environment that encouraged me to ask questions, observe, and learn many things about Vietnamese life and culture. My experiences in Vietnam also taught me about creative activism, and I had the pleasure of being a part of multiple activism projects including Vietnam's first ever "Freeze Event", and a photography project designed to raise awareness surrounding issues of domestic violence.
Some of my daily tasks with the NGO included quantifying data into Excel spreadsheets for accessibility and review by staff, editing texts published by the organization that were translated into English, and conducted research on new ideas and ways to spread the NGO’s mission. It was during this internship that I discovered my passion for advocacy in the pursuit of positive change.
