Global Citizenship
For me, global citizenship starts with a genuine curiosity about the unfamiliar. As someone born into a position of privilege, I have a responsibility to get to know the world around me. I pursued this goal during my senior year of high school, where I spent three months in Mandeville, Jamaica volunteering at a pre-school. My desire to travel was amplified during my undergraduate career, when I spent half of my junior year in Hanoi, Vietnam. The linkages between the global and local continues to astound me, and global citizenship something I intend to continue for the rest of my life.
Hanoi, Vietnam
Center for Studies and Applied Sciences in Gender, Family, Women, and Adolescents
I studied abroad at Hanoi University in Hanoi Vietnam during my junior year of college. As part of my abroad experience I attained an internship with a non-governmental organization called the Center for Applied Sciences in Gender, Family, Women, and Adolescents or CSAGA. CSAGA has three main focuses: to prevent human trafficking, to prevent violence against women and girls, and to promote lesbian rights in Vietnam. My role at this organization was largely researching student engagement in these issues at the local Hanoi University. This internship also taught me about creative activism; I had the pleasure of co-organizing multiple activism projects including Vietnam's first ever "Freeze Event", and a photography project designed to raise awareness surrounding issues of domestic violence.

Mandeville, Jamaica
Project Abroad The four months I spent in Jamaica during my senior year of high school forever changed my perspective on global challenges. I taught preschool in one of the poorest districts in the country, learning problem-solving and leadership skills on the fly. This experience gave me a first-hand look into how drought and climate change is effecting communities all over the world. Since this experience, not a day has passed that I have not thought about water as a privilege. |
